2026 Board Member Elections

This year’s Board Member election will once again follow the same hybrid model that was used in 2025. This structure allows members the option to vote electronically at District Meetings or online until voting closes. The Board has appointed Bev DeVries as the Returning Officer for Board Member elections.

Growers eligible to vote will be receiving information in late October about elections for open Board Member positions via email. There are four positions available for the 2026 elections, with each term lasting two years. Please contact our office if you have questions about the process.

The following Board member positions are open for election:

District 1: Ryan Leclair, Peter Epp

District 2: Tracy Gubbels

District 3: Dan Froese

Nortera Update

Research Update:

Thanks to support from the OPVG and other funding partners, Nortera has been able to significantly expand agronomy research and development capacity in Ontario, with visions of further expansion in Ontario and beyond. R&D farms have been established in Tupperville and St. Thomas in order to produce strong, replicated datasets.

For peas, around 350 plots were planted to evaluate new cultivars, biostimulants, foliar fertilizers, fungicide use, and demonstrations on herbicide tolerance and in-furrow dry fertilizer applications. In beans, we have evaluated another 350 plots of new varieties and various foliar fertilizer and biostimulant applications. In corn, we planted around 1000 plots to evaluate new hybrids and how they individually respond to intensive management systems, yield response to varying planting populations of 10 key commercial hybrids, and 10 unique fungicide application strategies and their respective impact on disease control and yield in sweet corn.

As research funding to public institutions faces continued reduction, placing these programs at risk of closure (while some already are shutting down), it is absolutely vital that our industry continues to conduct this research by any means necessary. Nortera is excited and looks forward to continued investment in this space.

 Public consultations regarding CUSMA

Global Affairs Canada has launched its second phase of public consultations regarding the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), which are effective immediately and will continue until November 3, 2025.

CUSMA, which replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on July 1, 2020, ensures Canada’s preferential access to the United States and Mexico. As with the previous consultation, the Government of Canada is seeking feedback on how the Agreement is functioning. Your input will inform preparations for the first joint review of CUSMA in 2026 and guide efforts to ensure the effective operation of the Agreement.

Members of the agriculture and agri-food sector are encouraged to participate in this consultation by sharing their experiences and perspectives on CUSMA's operation. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us understand the key areas of the Agreement that are working well and potential areas for improvement.

Please submit your written responses by email to CUSMA-Consultations-ACEUM@international.gc.ca, with a copy to aafc.tand-dacn.aac@agr.gc.ca. Alternatively, you may send your submission by mail to:

Ontario Agriculture Week 2025

Ontario Agriculture Week is a time to recognize and celebrate the people who grow, harvest, and process the food that feeds our communities. Each year, during the first full week of October, we take the opportunity to highlight the vital role agriculture plays in our province’s economy.

Ontario’s farms provide an incredible diversity of fresh, high-quality products and behind each harvest are dedicated farmers and farm families who work tirelessly to care for the land and strengthen our local food system. For processing vegetable growers, the beans, peas, corn, squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, and other vegetables grown in Ontario are part of a sustainable, locally rooted food supply that supports jobs, communities, and food security.

Show your support for Ontario’s food sector by using the hashtag #ONTAgWeek and #LoveONFood across your social media platforms
