Research Highlights: Figuring out Phytophthora

Every year, OPVG invests in local research projects to support continuous improvements for Ontario’s processing vegetables and address issues facing our industry.

Phytophthora capsici is a highly destructive, soil-borne disease that impacts a range of processing vegetable crops including tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash and pumpkins.

In 2024, Amanda Tracey, vegetable crop specialist with OMAFA, led a research project that included evaluating the reliability of a soil test that could help growers know before planting if the pathogen was in their fields. They sampled 84 fields in southern Ontario and used an available soil-based test to detect Phytophthora.

Research results

Sometimes research doesn’t produce the results you expect but provides valuable insights. Tracey found the test wasn’t very accurate at detecting the pathogen, especially in areas where they observed Phytophthora symptoms in the field.

“We aren’t recommending growers use a soil-based test for Phytophthora at this point because we didn’t see reliable enough results,” says Tracey. “But we’ll keep looking for ways to give growers tool to manage this disease.”
