The Ontario Processing Vegetable Growers (OPVG) is a non-profit grower organization for producers of tomatoes, green peas, sweet corn, green and wax beans, cucumbers, beets, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, lima beans, onions, peppers, pumpkin and squash for the canning, freezing and pickling industry. Revised Regulation 440 Now Posted
The OPVG has received formal notice from the Farm Products Marketing Commission that the revised Regulation 440 has been posted and brought into force effective today (December 21, 2017). The communication received from the Commission is attached, which contains a link to the Regulations. The Board is scheduled to meet the first week of January to review these Regulations in detail. OTRI Project - Piloting a Worker Safety System
Last November, the original board members of the OPVG sat down with Tomecek Agronomy Services Inc. to discuss how a newly created Worker Safety App could benefit not only local farm workers, but also the agricultural industry as a whole. Via a mobile phone app, growers can record the details of their field’s spray events, then transmit this information in real-time to all workers on their operation. Read More

Food Safety
Several months ago, all growers would have received from the OPVG, a brief note reviewing the issue of food safety in a processing vegetable context, accompanied by a letter from food safety expert, Dr. Doug Powell. At the risk of restating the obvious, the science has not changed. The “processing” step in preserving canned, frozen and pickled vegetables destroys any pathogens present. Read More
